A HEALTH trust is investigating the death of a mentally-ill patient in its care.

On Sunday, a 28-year-old man was found dead in the grounds of the hospital, in St James’s Hospital, Locksway Road, Milton, which is run by Solent NHS Trust.

Matthew Hall, associate director for adult mental health and dental services, at the trust, said: ‘On Sunday evening, a 28-year-old man, who was a patient in a ward at St James’ Hospital, was found dead in the grounds of the hospital.

‘He had been noted missing earlier in the evening and was discovered by security staff searching the grounds for him.

‘Police and ambulance personnel attended, but sadly he was not able to be revived.

‘A full internal investigation into the care and treatment of the patient has commenced and we will involve the patient’s family in our investigation.

‘On behalf of Solent NHS Trust, I would like to extend condolences to family and friends.’
