THE kind words from patients saw Professor Amjad Parvaiz named Hospital Doctor of the Year at this year’s Best of Health Awards.

Prof Parvaiz, who works as a consultant colorectal surgeon at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Cosham, scooped the top prize at the awards ceremony last Friday.

He said: ‘I’m excited and surprised to have won.

‘Each one of the other doctors I was named with deserve to be winner of the Hospital Doctor of the Year category.

‘What makes the award more special is that it wasn’t given to me by management or staff.

‘In fact it was the patients who put me forward and voted for me.

‘We always whinge about being over-worked, but things like these awards just make it all worthwhile.’

Nominations praised the specialist consultant for his impeccable bedside manner, and for being kind, considerate, friendly, caring and supportive.

Professor Peter Brennan, a consultant oral and maxillofacial surgeon, was the runner-up.

The winners of our Best of Health Awards 2011 were given their trophies at a glitzy ceremony held at Portsmouth Guildhall.
