PREPARATIONS are underway for the Wiggle Portsmouth Triathlon.

The city’s first version of the endurance event is being held on September 22.

Athletes and residents will be taking part in a one-mile swim along Southsea beach, followed by a 25-mile bike ride through Gunwharf Quays, the Historic Dockyard and the Portsmouth Naval Base.

Competitors will then undertake a six-mile run along the seafront and past the Garrison Church in Old Portsmouth.

They will return to finish in front of the Pyramids Centre.

The whole event is being sponsored by Wiggle – the world’s biggest road cycling online retailer, which started as a cycle shop in Portsmouth.

Tania Almond, Portsmouth City Council’s triathlon officer, said: ‘We are so excited to host the first Wiggle Portsmouth triathlon.’

‘Hosting a major sporting event is hugely important for the city. People are inspired by watching athletes compete in their hometown.’
