PATIENTS in Gosport and Fareham have praised a series of programmes that help them manage their health and caring responsibilities.

The Fareham and Gosport Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has paid Self-Management UK to run workshops covering chronic disease, persistent pain, mental health and carers – with plans for more throughout 2014.

Patients from five practices – Waterside Medical Centre, Stoke Road Medical Centre, Brune Medical Centre, in Gosport, and Highlands Road and The Centre Practice, in Fareham, were selected by their GPs to take part.

Dr Ian Bell, clinical lead for IT and clinical projects at the CCG, said: ‘We face enormous challenges in dealing with long term conditions relating to lifestyle.

‘For example, almost a fifth of adults in Gosport smoke, with the attendant health risk this poses.

Over a quarter of adults in Gosport and Fareham are obese which increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and some cancers.’
