A TOP consultant says a drug which could reduce the risk of women developing breast cancer could be available in Portsmouth by the end of this year.

The National Institute for Clinical Excellence is consulting on whether women at high risk of cancer because of family history, could be offered tamoxifen as preventative treatment for the first time.

Constantinos Yiangou, a consultant breast surgeon at Queen Alexandra Hospital, in Cosham, said: ‘If it is approved by, let’s say the summer, then a few months after that we would like to get the drug in.

‘It is something we are interested in.’
