WEIGHING only a 1lb when she was born, Emilee Houghton truly is a little miracle.
Parents Charlie Froud and Douglas Houghton could not be more proud to celebrate their precious daughter’s first birthday.
It was touch and go for the tot when she was born at just 27 weeks.
Her early birth meant she only weighed 1lb (460g).
But against all odds the family celebrated her first birthday yesterday, and say they could not be happier to reach the milestone.
Charlie, 21, a stay-at-home mum, said: ‘My first child Poppy-Jane was stillborn in 2012.
‘I have an illness that causes me to have high blood pressure and because of this Emilee stopped growing in my womb.
‘Doctors said I would need to have a Caesarean section and they needed to deliver her.
‘It was extremely nerve-wracking and we were expecting the worst.
‘There was a high risk of her not surviving.
‘It was very stressful for us, particularly as we had her very quickly after losing our first child.’
But determined to be a fighter, Emilee grew stronger each day.
She spent three months in the neonatal intensive care unit in Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham.
Douglas, 24, who builds masts for boats, said: ‘Emilee is doing really well now, she learnt to crawl a bit later, but otherwise she’s doing really well.
‘She’s sitting up and plays well – she really is our little miracle.
‘When she was born doctors said she would be on oxygen for a while, but she’s a fighter and was off it very quickly.
‘We are so happy to be celebrating her birthday.’
The parents, of The Anchorage, Gosport, have organised a garden party for close friends and family as part of the birthday celebrations. This takes place on Saturday.
