PATIENTS were diverted from Queen Alexandra Hospital’s accident and emergency department today.

Up to 17 ambulances were seen queuing up to get in to the Cosham hospital’s emergency department.

Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs QA, said that between 3pm and 4pm, six patients were taken to Southampton General Hospital for treatment.

The trust said it is now seeing all its patients again, and said there had been an ‘unprecedented’ high demand on its services.

One woman, who wished to remain anonymous, said: ‘My mother collapsed in Tesco and I took her to A&E.

‘But I was turned away and told to see the doctor.’
