GENEROUS residents have helped to raise more than £1m for West Sussex hospitals in the last year.

The Love Your Hospital charity, based at St Richard’s Hospital, Chichester, has opened its books, revealing it received £1,094,000 in the financial year up to March 2011.

Of that total, £363,000 came from donations from members of the public.

Legacies accounted for £447,000 and fundraising contributed £95,000 to the pot.

St Richard’s new cancer day unit benefited from heart monitors at a cost of £120,000 as well as scalp-cooling aids for patients undergoing chemotherapy.

Lesley-Anne Lloyd, head of charity operations at the Western Sussex Hospitals Trust, said: ‘The cost of generating funds includes all of the publicity and promotional activities across all hospital sites, including donation leaflets.

‘It also includes all expenditure against the organisation of events and the cost of promoting the lottery and other fundraising campaigns.’
