And The News was invited to take a look around to see how the centre, on the former St Mary’s Hospital site, is shaping up.

The majority of work has been done on the former maternity and paediatric blocks – known as blocks A and B.

Block A has a new main entrance and reception area, which includes a community mental health team, physiotherapy and occupational therapy and sexual health services.

Some services are being provided by Solent NHS Trust.

Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust will be providing the new maternity service at the campus.

Jan Henry, clinical lead and post-natal co-ordinator, said: ‘We’re really excited for the families in Portsmouth and excited to have facilities on the Portsea island.

‘Women have a choice about where they would like to give birth and now they have this community unit.

‘We will also provide breast feeding workshops, ante-natal and post-natal classes.’

Work on redeveloping the site was started in 2009.

The scheme received £17.1m from the Department of Health, with NHS Portsmouth providing the other £1.5m.

The primary care trust is now overseeing the installation of furniture and equipment in the new facilities.

It is officially due to open on December 12.

Catherine Webster, senior project manager at NHS Portsmouth, said: ‘This is a real achievement.

‘It’s great to see the project come into fruition. This service is about complementing the acute work done at Queen Alexandra Hospital.’

All next week people are invited to a series of open days to take a look at the campus.

Visitors will be offered 45-minute tours from Monday, before the official opening.

The open days are free to attend and take place on the following days and times:

n Monday, November 28, from 1.30pm to 3.30pm.

n Tuesday, November 29, from 10am to midday.

n Wednesday, November 30, from midday to 3pm.
