SMOKERS are being encouraged to join a nationwide challenge and kick the habit for good.
PompeyQuit, run by Solent NHS Trust, is taking part in this year’s Stoptober challenge, an NHS campaign that has adopted ‘fags for gags’.
PompeyQuit team manager Sian Howells said: ‘Last year, nearly 250,000 people nationwide took part in Stoptober with more than 1,500 smokers from Portsmouth getting involved.
‘For those that kept going, there were huge health, wealth and social benefits. Research has suggested stopping smoking for just 28 days can extend a smoker’s life by up to one week and make it five times more likely that they will quit for good.’
Stoptober encourages people to stop at the same time and go 28 days without smoking.
People can sign up and get a pack, with includes a free 28-day mobile app with access to a text or email service that will give you daily tips and jokes.
