MORE than £800 was raised at a charity match between surgeons and rugby players.

The first match for the Hope Cup took place on Saturday between Queen Alexandra Hospital Medics and Portsmouth Rugby Club.

The rugby club triumphed 38 points to 21, and a total of £837 was raised for the Portsmouth Down Syndrome Association.

Around 500 people attended the event, which had various stalls, and attractions to raise money.

The Hope Cup will be an annual event with a different charity being chosen each year.

Organiser Ian Douglas, who is a nurse and played, said: ‘There was a high standard of rugby, which pleased the crowd. It was a good advertisement for community rugby.’
