THOUSANDS of pounds have been raised for a cardiac charity during a mayoral year.

Former mayor of Fareham Cllr Dennis Steadman raised £17,206 for Wessex Heartbeat in his year in the role.

He said: ‘This was the charity which, during my year in office, had received tremendous help and assistance from the mayoral team of volunteers who worked so hard to make my year such a happy and successful one.

‘I extend my sincere thanks to them all.

‘May I also say that I’ve been overwhelmed by the kindness of the people of Fareham and further afield who supported my events and dug so deep into their pockets.

‘Their generosity is to be so greatly admired.’

Alison Farell, chief executive of Wessex Heartbeat said: ‘This is a fabulous amount of money raised.

‘We had some very interesting fundraisers, including the school proms and Carole riding through the town centre on a Harley Davidson.

‘Everyone worked very hard in raising money for Wessex Heartbeat and I would like to thank everyone involved.’
