PREVENTION is better than cure – and Self Care Week is urging people to take steps to grow older healthily.

The week, which runs from Monday, November 12, to Sunday, November 18, encourages people to take more control over their own health, such as eating a healthy diet, taking regular exercise, drinking alcohol within safe limits and not smoking.

Dr Stuart Ward, medical director for the primary care trust cluster Ship, said: ‘Self-care puts individuals in control of their own health.

‘Providing people with the support and advice to do this means greater independence for patients and helps to reduce unnecessary hospital admissions.

‘Medical professionals can all provide help and advice to improve self-care, and we can all take steps to prevent ill health by making healthy lifestyle choices.’
