MOST of Portsmouth and the surrounding areas battled against gale force winds yesterday.

People walking along the Hot Walls, in Old Portsmouth, had to dive for cover after 30mph winds whipped up huge waves from the sea. But forecasters said the weather was due to improve today and lower wind speeds and sunny spells were expected. Tomorrow will see showers and heavy rain is due on Monday and Tuesday.

Met Office forecaster Reid Morrison said: ‘The recent wind and rain comes down to natural variability in the weather.’

Firefighters from Cosham had to repair part of Fareham Shopping Centre’s corrugated iron roof after it became loose in the bad weather.

Security guards spotted the damage at 8.15am.
