A SUSPECTED arson attack caused a huge fire at a barn near Chichester.

Firefighters were called to the barn at Almodington Lane, Almodington, at about 10.05pm last night.

The barn, measuring 32ft by 32ft, contained five tonnes of hay bales that were on fire.

A second fire had been started in a tack room next to the barn.

Fire engines from Chichester, East Wittering and Selsey went to tackle the blaze, which burned throughout the night.

A spokeswoman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said: ‘They had to release some horses and take them to safety because the barn fire was close by.

‘It has been handed over to the occupier this morning. They are going to have to let the barn burn because there’s so much of it.’

She said the incident had been recorded as deliberate ignition and police had been informed.

Firefighters left the scene at about 6.40am.
