THE first Christmas lights switch-on of the year went off with a bang in Southsea during a firework finale.
Hundreds of people ooh-ed and aah-ed at the display following a late afternoon’s entertainment in Palmerston Road precinct yesterday.
Pompey legend Linvoy Primus, Lord Mayor of Portsmouth Cheryl Buggy, the ‘ugly sisters’ from the Kings Theatre panto Cinderella, Heart FM South Coast presenter Warren Hayden and a ‘clown fish’ from Southsea’s Blue Reef Aquariuam all helped with the big switch-on.
Visitors were entertained by a wealth of local talent including Portsmouth Grammar School brass band, Portsmouth High School’s junior chamber choir, dance groups Streetforce DC, Amici, Timestep Schools of dance and ballet, the Open Access group from Portsmouth High School’s senior school and Southzone.
Singing duo 6ft 4, 11-and-a-half Inches also performed as well as Zumba instructor Maria Bentley from Fitness Star.
Yasmin Devaney, 22, of Shaftesbury Road, Southsea, took eight-month-old daughter Phoenix along to the show. She said: ‘It was lovely. Phoenix has never seen fireworks before. The dancing was really good as well.’
