‘I found a pipe cleaner in my dog’s food’

PET owners Alan and Debbie Brindle are furious after finding a pipe cleaner in their beloved dog Rosie’s food.

The couple were getting ready to feed their five-month-old black labrador-husky cross when they found it.

The six-inch pipe cleaner, which was yellow and glittery, was curled up in the bottom of the can in the jelly.

But Mr Brindle, of Turner Avenue, Gosport, said when he got in contact with Pedigree, it refused to help him.

The 53-year-old said: ‘We bought the dog food on Sunday, from Tesco in Grange Road.

‘When we opened it and started feeding her, we found the pipe cleaner curled up in the bottom of the tin.

‘It was like a worm but when we took it out, it was 6in long.

‘We couldn’t believe it. Luckily we saw it or it could have done a lot of damage. We are angry that somehow it got in there. It could have killed her.’

Rosie was born from Mr Brindle’s labrador Poppy, who died three months after giving birth due to complications.

‘It makes the situation worse,’ Mr Brindle said.

‘We haven’t long lost Poppy and if her puppy had died too, it would have been awful. It’s upsetting to think of what might have happened if she had eaten it.’

Mr Brindle has written to Trading Standards and it is investigating.

He added: ‘We are all at a loss as to how it got in there. It looks like it is part of a craft set because it is bright yellow.

‘I am glad Trading Standards has decided to look into it.’

A spokeswoman from Pedigree said: ‘As a company we have many quality systems in place and take extensive precautions to prevent foreign material entering our products.

‘We take any consumer complaint extremely seriously and have been in contact with Mr Brindle to request the return of the item so that we can carry out a full and thorough investigation.’
