ACCORDING to the district council, there are a growing number of homeless people living in Chichester, compared to last year’s figures.

Housing options manager Marie Grele told the cabinet: ‘We have clear evidence and intelligence about who’s sleeping rough on the streets.

‘It’s not just in the city centre but other encampments as well.’

At a scrutiny committee meeting, it was agreed that the council’s internal letting Homefinder scheme will continue.

The scheme was set up to deal with an anticipated rise in homelessness caused by government welfare reforms.

Scrutiny committee member Myles Cullen said: ‘Homelessness is one of the most awful things that can occur.’

Other members agreed as they deliberated over the work provided by the charity Stonepillow.

Member Rob Dunmall said: ‘Although I am sometimes uneasy about the way Stonepillow works, it’s helping homeless people on a wider basis, which is needed. ’
