POLICE are investigating after a fire broke out in a block of flats in Portsmouth.

The bedroom blaze in Chandos Rise, Buckingham Street, Landport, sparked a major call-out from fire stations in the area.

It had started in one of the bedrooms.

A bed was destroyed and the room was smoke damaged.

It happened at 6.10pm yesterday and 20 firefighters from five crews attended.

Crew manager Lee Higgins, from Southsea fire station, was at the scene.

He said: ‘It was a fire in a bedroom, not too severe.

‘We dealt with it with our full high-rise procedure.’

He said two crews entered the building as part of an early-prevention plan and they were followed by a third team shortly afterwards.

He added: ‘Smoke was coming out of the flat, which was open. The door was shut and smoke was coming out the back window.

‘A large number of residents came out at the fire alarm.

‘It could have developed into something. Fortunately we were able to control it.’

Four jets and six breathing apparatus were used.

Crews from Southsea, Havant and Cosham attended. The cause is unknown.
