SPRING has sprung and we’re fast on the way to summer.

So there’s no better time to enter this year’s Portsmouth in Bloom competition.

Southsea Greenhouse is running the contest for a second year, in partnership with Portsmouth City Council.

Chairman Sue Portman said she wants to build on last year’s success.

She said: ‘We were delighted when we were offered the opportunity to run Portsmouth In Bloom.

‘It was a great honour and we want to grow the competition even further this year.

‘We had 186 people enter in 2014 and we hope with a couple of changes, we can exceed that number.’

The full list of categories are:

n Front garden

n Hanging basket or wall container

n Balcony

n Sustainable garden

n Public premises

n Community gardens

n Business gardens

n Gardens in sheltered housing or apartments

n Eat my street

n Allotment

n School decorated with flowers

n Eat my school

n School environmental project

This year, further and higher education establishments will be able to enter the ‘Schools’ education categories whereas in previous years they had to enter the business category.

They will be judged alongside secondary schools, with nurseries, infant and junior schools judged separately.

There are 16 categories available to enter and Southsea Greenhouse are heartily inviting residents, businesses, community groups and schools to take part.

One of the important aspects of organising the competition is the securing of sponsorship, without which there would be no funds to run it. Major sponsors Colas and Portsmouth Water are once again supporting Bloom along with a host of other sponsors. Portsmouth Cultural Trust have offered the Guildhall as the venue for the Awards ceremony for the winners which takes place in September. It’s going to be a superb evening, and all shortlisted entrants are invited to attend.

The News is very happy to be sponsoring Portsmouth in Bloom too.
