A TEENAGER has been selected as one of the top nine in a national recital competition performing the words of William Shakespeare.

Jack Gouldbourne, 13, of Suffolk Drive in Whiteley, was picked from 2,000 youngsters to be featured on a one-off documentary.

Off By Heart Shakespeare allows teenagers to display their determination to vocalise and perform the words of William Shakespeare to the best of their ability.

Jack wowed the judges with a scene from As You Like It.

He said: ‘It’s absolutely amazing. I feel so lucky to get to the final nine. I still can’t quite believe it.

‘I believe without Shakespeare drama wouldn’t be where it is today. It’s where all drama and theatre started.

‘In the audition I just felt lucky to be there. When I was performing in front of those judges it was extraordinary.

‘To know that everyone in there had the love of Shakespeare helped me with my audition.’

The winner of Off By Heart Shakespeare will be revealed at 9pm tonight on BBC2.
