MUSIC has the power to inspire, lift our spirits when we’re feeling down and evoke memories of times that are now behind us.

You may have a favourite piece of music or a song. Why do you like it?

Often it is because it remind us of a moment in our lives – good or bad – or someone who is or was special to us.

Well, here in Emsworth we are celebrating the 175th anniversary of our church, St James’, with an extravaganza of music which will tell the story of the church and town through good times and bad.

We’ll begin in 1840, in the early years of Queen Victoria’s reign, and then we’ll go on a journey recalling how together we weathered the rise and fall of the local oyster industry, endured the sadness and horrors of war, and rejoiced in hundreds of weddings and christenings.

Sarah Pinnell, the church’s director of music, is planning the event and there will be various styles and genres of music.

There will be choral and vocal items, instrumental solos and a visual presentation.

But our journey does not end here at the 175th anniversary – we will continue to walk together through all that lies ahead – the good times and the bad.

Do come along and join us for what promises to be a truly memorable event.

It’s happening on Saturday, November 7 at 7pm in the church.

It’s free and there are no tickets, please just turn up. There will be an opportunity to make a donation towards our anniversary project to replace the west doors of the church and you are welcome to contribute towards this if you would like to.

More details about the event will be available nearer the time.

The church will host its annual charity auction on Sunday.

To take place at the Parish Hall in Church Path, Emsworth, viewing starts at 11am and sales will start at 2pm.

Donations for the auction are still being accepted and all funds raised will go to the parish of Warblington-with-Emsworth.

Refreshments will be available throughout the day and there will be no premium charged for buyers.
