Joy of the musicals

IT’S a council chamber more used to heated debates about planning applications.

But it became a concert venue for superb renditions of well-loved pieces from musicals Les Miserables, Oliver and Chicago.

The Plaza in Havant hosted the mayor’s charity concert, which was performed by Emsworth Concert Band.

More than 100 people enjoyed the performance.

Councillor Gerald Shimbart, mayor of Havant borough, said: ‘It was a brilliant concert.

‘It was all sorts of band music, from overtures, to the musicals.

‘There was a brilliant xylophone solo called The Joyful Skeleton.’

The music was directed by Dean Waller, from Emsworth Concert Band.

The event raised around £550 for the mayor’s charities, which this year are The Samaritans, autism support group FLASH, Cancerwise charity and respite-provider Smile Support and Care.

Cllr Shimbart added: ‘I’m pleased with any money we can raise.’
