Kite festival to return to Common next week

KITE flyers from around the world will arrive in Southsea for one of the world’s biggest festivals.

From Saturday, August 27, to Monday, August 29, the 20th Portsmouth Kite Festival will be held on Southsea Common.

From 10am to 5pm, flyers from India, New Zealand, Singapore, America and across Europe will perform displays in the event’s main arena.

On the Monday, there will be a free-flying session and a free dog show.

The free festival is the 23rd biggest of its kind in the world, and this year hopes to stage a record-breaking event.

The attempt will be to get the most revolution kites flying in a synchronised formation.

Fifty must be doing the choreographed routine at the same time to break the UK record.

Heather Todd, Portsmouth City Council’s assistant events manager, said: ‘The festival is in a marvellous setting overlooking the Solent and with good winds which shows off the kites and our city at their very best.

‘It’s a popular event every year.’
