THE time-honoured art of knitting was celebrated at a Knitting in the Park gathering in Portsmouth.

A group of knitters met in Victoria Park to work on their projects and chat about the benefits of the pastime to mark an international World Wide Knit in a Public Day.

The meeting was organised by Elizabeth Caush, business support officer at Portsmouth Central Library.

She said that although knitting had gone through a decline, it was once again becoming more common.

She said: ‘My fear was that it was going to be a dying skill but I don’t think it is now. I think it is becoming more popular.’

The reigning Miss Hampshire, Larissa Hirst, joined in with the knitting.

Ms Caush has written a book about knitting called The Blanket Book. She said she is available for talks about the book, for more information e-mail blanketbook1@gmail.com.
