Police give residents advice in bid to reduce crime in Portsmouth

POLICE braved sub-zero temperatures to give crime prevention advice.

Safer Neighbourhoods Team officers in Copnor and North End offered free bike security marking in College Park, Copnor Road, Copnor, on Friday.

They also spoke to shoppers at the Co-op in Copnor Road to give them tips on how to prevent their homes being burgled. And drivers were given advice on how to prevent vehicle crime.

A number of bikes were coded and officers issued three fixed penalty notices for cycling on the pavement.

Police Community Support Officer Helen Jolley said: ‘It is so important to keep in touch with the residents of Copnor and North End face to face and reassure them that we are on patrol every shift.

‘We were able to give crime prevention advice to the footfall of Copnor Road and alert them to tactics to help prevent their properties and vehicles from being targeted. We were also able to hand out lanyards to ladies to help secure their purses in their bags. It was a very successful event.’

Fratton Sector Inspector Fiona Quade said: ‘This engagement event was necessary in light of a recent spate of dwelling burglaries in Copnor. It is really important that residents understand what steps they can and should be taking to safeguard their properties.’
