Portsmouth man caused £4,000 damage to chandelier

A PUB-GOER who smashed a £4,000 chandelier has been told to pay compensation.

Sam Whiteaway caused £4,050 worth of damage to the glass decoration at the Lord Palmerston pub in Palmerston Road, Southsea.

The 20-year-old was out drinking with friends when he caused the damage.

Whiteaway, of Deerhurst Crescent, Paulsgrove, Portsmouth, pleaded guilty to a charge of criminal damage when he appeared at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court.

The magistrates ordered him to pay £500 in compensation to Wetherspoons, which owns the pub, and £85 in costs.

He was given a 12-month conditional discharge, which means if he stays out of trouble for the next year he will not receive any further punishment.
