A Coastguard helicpoter from Lee-on-the-Solent took part in a dramatic rescue as a ship sent out a Mayday alert in the Channel.

The Antigua-Barbuda-flagged EMS Majestic began taking on water in the Dover Strait just after 7pm last night.

As vessels in the area went to the ship’s aid amid reports that she was sinking with seven crew on board, coastguard helicopters from Lee-on-Solent and Lydd were sent to the scene, along with the Eastbourne RNLI lifeboat.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency said two ‘’non-essential’’ crew members were airlifted from the vessel for safety reasons.

Today a tug was towing the stricken ship to Southampton.
