Les Miserables film to be shot in Portsmouth
STAGE TO SCREEN Hit musical Les Miserables is being made into a film
HOLLYWOOD has come calling in Portsmouth to find hundreds of men to appear as extras in the blockbuster film Les Miserables.
Scenes for one of the most hotly-anticipated big screen adaptations ever will be filmed in the city and men of all shapes and sizes are needed alongside leading men Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe.
The Australian actors will take the lead roles in the film musical, which has been adapted from the much-loved Victor Hugo novel about poverty, love, heartache and revolution in 19th France.
Location scouts are looking at Portsmouth and Winchester sites and casting begins on Saturday at The Langstone Student Village, Furze Lane, off Locksway Road, Milton.
Casting agent Wayne Berko, from Uni-Versal Extras, said: ‘We’re looking for anyone over the age of 16 to play a variety of different roles, from peasant to military guys, in 19th century France.
‘We’re looking for guys who perhaps have military experience, people whose hair isn’t too funky and clearly not from that era. You’ve got to use common sense – if you’ve got purple streaks you’re not going to be used. We are looking to film in Portsmouth and we want to use local people.’
The Historic Dockyard is a likely backdrop for the scenes.
No previous acting experience is necessary and the casting will last only a few minutes while photos, measurements and contact details are taken.
Hundreds are expected at the casting which is 10am to 4pm.
A second casting for men and women will take place at Walton Suite, Winchester Guildhall, on February 26 from 10am to 4pm.
Filming begins in March. The film is released in December.

Saturday, March 24, 2012 at 01:41 AMHey hey hey , I am so so lucky and have been selected from 20 thousand applicants from the audition castings to be a part of this amazing rare opportunity. . Im not a toothless sponger not got evil vacant stares .Our city was chosen for its long history with fance and the napoleonic buildings and forts and docks are stilll here from the 19th century . Its going to be absolutely fantastic , The last time a massive feature film was filmed on location in Portsmouth was the late Ken Russel's TOMMY the pinball wizzard in !970s with Elton John Rodger Daltry . City girls school pupils were in it and hilsea lido in its full glory with the fountainf and waterslides and diving boards that are distant memories , but the one scene filming that stays in most pompey residents at that time of filming was the disasterous accident with stage lighting in South Parade Pier resulting in the pier actually catching fire , and people thinking it was a stunt till minutes later wen the golden dome rooves had fierce flames destroying it all . . those who are not old enough ask your parents and grandparents they might of been in it all those years ago. Tommy is available on DVD for those who want to see pompey past in fame glory of the big screen

Friday, February 10, 2012 at 02:17 PM@7 Portsmouth Maritime Museum is one of the best in the world! So put down your saucer of milk and go and visit it..... or are you too frightened that the Portsea oiks will steal your 'Dolce and Gabbana handbag... by the way if you get bored waiting in the queue might I suggest a little light reading, I believe that a dictionary might be quite educational you want to try it sometime soon!

Friday, February 10, 2012 at 01:17 PMThis is most defiantly a spoof story. Why on earth would they want to film a hollywood movie here in portsmouth. How could they even film a film here. They would have there equipment stolen off of them by the time they enter they enter portsea. So its not only very unlikely its impossible.

Thursday, February 9, 2012 at 04:57 PMIt wiill be interesting to see how the organisation copes with 000's of hopefuls descending on LSV. Saturday is when all the local sports clubs play at Langstone. Two Double Decker buses running the shuttle run for Students living in Langstone. It's bad enough for local traffic without this event going on. I see alot of tempers getting frayed

Thursday, February 9, 2012 at 01:59 PMIf they are looking for "actors" with a "damaged" 1000 yard stare look they could recruit from Commercial Road. If they can prize them out of their tracksuits, they'd make cracking extras. Although you would have to use CGI to edit out all the sparks flying up from from their sovereign ring encrusted fingers as they drag them along on the pavement behind them.
