It came as part of a day of entertainment for shoppers, who were treated to Samba music, carols and street dancing.

The honour of switching on the lights was had by George Bartlett.

The seven-year-old won Young Citizen of Year for helping to care for his mum Claire Goodson, who has health problems.

Mrs Goodson, 28, of Windmill Grove, said: ‘I am incredibly proud – I shed a tear!’

Thousands of people also turned out to see the lights being switched on at Gunwharf Quays.
