WHATEVER the weather or time of day, the volunteer lifeboat crews will be on call this Christmas – ready to leave partially-unwrapped presents or half-eaten turkey to rescue anyone in trouble at sea.

Hayling lifeboat was launched last year to go to a suspected fire on a vessel in Chichester Harbour.

Over the past seven years the station has responded to eight requests for help during the Christmas period.

Michael Vlasto, RNLI operations director, said: ‘Christmas is typically a time of fun and relaxation with family and friends. So the fact that our volunteer lifeboat crew members are willing to carry a pager all over the festive season and launch the lifeboats to rescue those in danger at sea is testament to their absolute commitment.’
