VOLUNTEER litter-pickers have teamed up with sailors to help clean the area around HMS Sultan.

Brockhurst Litteraction, in Gosport, and HMS Sultan are working together to clear up their part of the town.

The organisers say litter has become a major problem in the area.

Sailors from HMS Sultan have now offered to scout around their base in Military Road on Saturday and Sundays to pick up any rubbish left there.

Tara Fisher, of Gosport Litteraction, said: ‘The council does what it can but it is fighting a losing battle against the litter on our streets.

‘Local people are encouraged to team up with the council and Streetscene to care about their environment and use litter bins which are placed strategically all around the borough.’

HMS Sultan and the Brockhurst Litteraction group hope their efforts will inspire other organisations to develop their own campaigns throughout the area.

It is part of a partnership between other Litteraction groups including Lee-on-the-Solent, Alverstoke, Give Gain and Grow and Loud and Proud.
