100 jobs axed - but it's not the credit crunch's fault
Around 100 jobs are to go in the Portsmouth area after BVT Surface Fleet announced a wave of cutbacks.
The defence firm, set up in July to deliver the navy's two new aircraft carriers, is cutting 135 posts around the UK with the bulk of them in south east Hampshire.
It follows the creation of the firm, a joint venture between the shipbuilding arms of BAE Systems and VT Group.
BVT said it was not related to the current economic downturn but designed to remove duplication of jobs.
BAE has announced 200 job cuts yesterday across its UK site, blaming a lack of orders from the Ministry of Defence.
Portsmouth South MP Mike Hancock said: 'This is a particularly painful time for people to lose their jobs and my sympathy goes to everyone affected.'
BVT spokesman Charles Thompson said the firm would be offering voluntary redundancy and had entered a three-month consultation period with its workforce and unions.
But he did not rule out the possibility of further redundancies in the integration period, due to last until the summer.
