£200,000 up for grabs in new grants

VOLUNTARY and community groups can apply for a share of almost £200,000 to fund activities for older people.

The grants, from West Sussex County Council, are aimed at getting isolated people out to make new friends in the community.

The application process for this year’s Prevention and Wellbeing Grants Programme has opened and grants are available up to £5,000.

Councillor Peter Catchpole, who is responsible for health and adult services at the council, said: ‘These community-based services and activities will contribute to the aims of our prevention and well-being agenda.’

He added: ‘They can be for small or large projects and help support social aspects of an individual’s life and to aid people not to feel isolated.’

He said one of the key aims is for people to get out, make friends and see others.

This could be through arts and crafts, quizzes or computer courses.

Organisations will receive feedback and payment in August once the applications have been assessed.

Last year awards ranged between £170 and £5,000.

Apply by calling 01243 642214 or emailing denise.north@westsussex.gov.uk.
