45ft mobile mast bid blasted by angry residents

FURIOUS residents have attacked plans to construct a 45ft mobile phone mast just yards from their homes.

Mobile phone giant Vodafone has applied to Gosport Borough Council to put up a mast in Carisbrooke Road, Peel Common.

But residents say it will be an eyesore and potentially damaging to health.

Engineer Brian Hart, 69, of Honeysuckle Close, said: 'All the people I've spoken to are against this. It is not the right area for it at all.

'It's right next to the Carisbrooke open space where people go for walks and have picnics.

'It's definitely going to have an adverse impact on the landscape.'

Tina Thornhill, 44, landlady of the Carisbrooke Arms, which is 30ft from the proposed mast site, said: 'I think it's disgusting. It's going to be right outside the pub. We've been trying very hard to make the area look nice over the last two-and-a-half years and they want to do this.'

Residents also fear the mast could interfere with the radio equipment of planes at the nearby Daedalus airfield at Lee-on-the-Solent

But Jason Wakeford, a spokesman for the Civil Aviation Authority, said there was no danger of the mast having an effect.

Vodafone spokesman Ally Stevens also reassured residents that they were not at risk. The company also refuted claims the mast would be an eyesore, saying it would be similar to other lamp-posts in the area.

She said: 'Since 2000 there have been more than 30 independent reviews of the potential effects of signals from base stations on health.

'These reviews have concluded there is no evidence of any adverse health effects.

'The proposed installation is similar in appearance to existing street furniture in the area.'

Residents can comment on the application until June 10.
