7,000-mile hike by one man and his dogs

A retired Royal Navy sailor is to walk every inch of the British coastline with his two dogs.

Ges Laker, 53, will be setting off from his home village of Warsash on the 7,000-mile trek which he expects to take a year.

His fund-raising trek begins on Saturday and his only companions will be his two black Labradors, Phoebe, aged six, and her two-year-old son Sumo.

His trek will boost the funds of the St Dunstan's Charity, which supports blind ex-service men and women to become self-sufficient, regain their optimism and make the most of their opportunities.

The father-of-two, who spent 20 years in the Royal Navy, said: 'Walking with two dogs will probably mean that people will come up and have a chat.

'I plan to be self-sufficient and I will be doing a lot of fishing on the way.

'I will probably walk about 20 miles a day but I am not out to break any records.'

Mr Laker and his dogs will sleep in a tent.

The self-employed landscape gardener has set up his own website called Lakers Coastline, where people can donate to St Dunstan's.

Through various fund-raising activities, backed by the local community, he has already raised more than 5,000.

Mr Laker, who will be going anticlockwise around Britain, plans to have breakfast at the Jolly Farmer at Warsash before setting off at 9am on Saturday.

Mr Laker is inviting people to join him on the first leg of his walk to the Gosport Ferry.
