TWO Portsmouth-based warships have been charging around the fjords of Norway putting future submarine commanders to the test.
HMS Richmond and HMS Westminster joined 20 warships and aircraft from Norway, the Netherlands, Denmark and France to train students on the international Submarine Command Course.
The course is known as Perisher, because failing it effectively spells the end of an officer’s career in submarines.
Commander Ryan Ramsey, the Perisher instructor, said: ‘The aim is to remain at periscope depth in the presence of close proximity warships.
‘As well as being a supreme test of the budding submarine commanders, the exercise has been as good a workout as the crew of a Type 23 frigate are going to get.’
HMS Richmond has now completed her part in the submariners’ course and is at sea training navigators, while HMS Westminster is due to visit London on Wednesday.
