Air traffic restored after glitch at centre
Flights returned to normal today after a computer error which caused disruption at airports was fixed.
A glitch in computers at the Swanwick Air Traffic Control Centre, Fareham, caused delays at airports including Gatwick, Heathrow, South-ampton and Luton.
The error was spotted at around 4pm and passengers were warned they faced long delays and cancellations.
The problem was solved by 7pm and Nats said this morning that the system was 'full steam ahead.'
BAA said it had cancelled around 35 flights and others had faced delays. There were delays of up to two hours at Southampton Airport.
Engineers were today investigating the cause of the fault at the Swanwick centre, which deals with all planes flying over south-east England.
Nats said restrictions on take-offs and landings had been introduced to ensure passenger safety while controllers operated manual systems, which work more slowly than the automatic ones.
