THOUSANDS of campaigners have signed a petition urging police to release Ashya King’s parents and allow them to seek alternative treatment for the youngster.

Almost 12,000 people have signed the online document that also puts pressure on Prime Minister David Cameron to intervene.

Portsmouth resident Ethan Dallas, who set up the petition, said in an accompanying open letter: ‘These parents want the best for their son, they want nothing more than to offer him the best possible chance of a normal life and had to take drastic measures as, it would appear, that the NHS would not allow them to seek the treatment of their choice for their young son.

‘It is sad to see these ordinary loving parents being accused of neglect - for wanting what’s best for their own child.’

Ashya’s parents Brett and Nagameh King were escorted by Spanish police to Madrid’s High Court earlier this morning for the first stage of their extradition to the UK.
