Are gold medallists fit enough for navy?

Two of Britain's gold medal winners from the Beijing Olympics will visit Gosport to put themselves through tough fitness tests.

Navy lieutenant Peter Reed, left, and Andrew Triggs-Hodge, right, who both won golds for rowing, will be put through their paces at the Institute of Naval Medicine in Alverstoke.

On Monday scientists will see how elite sportsmen measure up against the armed forces.

In 2000, while training as an officer on board the Portsmouth destroyer HMS Exeter, Lt Reed used an ergometer for the first time – and posted the fastest time in the Royal Navy's annual fleet-wide fitness competition.

Earlier this month he confirmed he would defend his coxless fours title in London 2012.
