Are you fit enough to attempt the triathlon?

People are being invited to take part in the Chichester Triathlon this July.

Men and women of all ages are being invited to swim, cycle and run their way to victory in the second Chichester Triathlon on Sunday, July 20.

Junior athletes will also have the chance to shine this year, when the first ever Junior Aquathon is held on the same day.

Triathlon competitors will begin with a 600m swim at Westgate Leisure Centre, followed by a 42km bike ride on a challenging course through Lavant, up South Harting Hill and back through Compton and Funtington, before returning to Westgate Leisure Centre for a final 10km out-and-back flat run along Centurions Way.

If people don't think they can manage the full triathlon themselves, a team can be entered, with each team member taking a different section of the course.

For under-16s, the Junior Aquathon comprises a swim and a run. The event is divided into age categories, with the distances dependent on the age of the competitor. Distances for the swim start from 66m – equivalent to two lengths at Westgate pool – for eight-year-olds, up to 400m – or 12 lengths – for 16-year-olds. This is followed by a run of between 600m and 3km, again depending on age.

Both events are being organised by Westgate Leisure Centre and Chichester District Council's sport and leisure team.

The council is also looking for volunteers to help on the day, registering athletes and marshalling the route of the running and cycling sections. If you are interested in helping, contact Amy Roots, community sports development officer, on (01243) 534871.

Application forms for the triathlon can be downloaded at www.chichester.gov.uk. The closing date for entries is July 11.
