Army bomb squad explodes package at recycling centre

POLICE are investigating the origins of a suspicious package blown up by an Army bomb squad at the weekend.

The Army Explosives Ordnance Disposal team was called by police to the recycling centre in Petersfield on Sunday morning.

Staff there found a suspicious item and called police. Roads around the centre were closed and a cordon put in place.

After detonating the package, the centre was kept shut so an investigation could take place.

A police spokeswoman said: ‘Following a controlled explosion carried out by members of the Army’s explosives ordnance division we are now examining the item. There is no threat to the safety of the public.’
