POLICE are hunting for witnesses after a man was raped in Gosport.

The 43-year-old victim was walking home when he was sexually assaulted between 5.15am and 5.30am on a cycle path near Mortimore Road and Station Road on Sunday.

The suspect then followed the man to Mortimore Road where a confrontation took place.

A 24-year-old man from Gosport has been arrested on suspicion of rape and bailed until February 15.

Detective Constable Nick Wieczorek from Cosham police station said: ‘The footpath is well used by local people and although the incident took part in the early hours of the morning it is likely that someone may have been out and using the footpath at that time.

‘Did you see a man matching the description of the suspect in the area at the time or did you witness the assault or following confrontation?’

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Det Con Wieczorek at Cosham police station by phoning 101.
