Athletics: Fast start for runners
PORTSMOUTH-AREA athletes got off to a fast start when the new cross-country campaign got under way.
The Hampshire League began in cool and blustery conditions at Farley Mount in Winchester.
The senior men's race boasted a strong field with nearly 250 runners competing for top honours, with the in-form Angus Maclean leading everyone home.
Mark Challen took first place in the under-15 event while his Portsmouth AC clubmate Peter Newton was the best over-60 entrant.
Former Portsmouth club runner James Ellis, who now wears the colours of Aldershot, Farnham & District, comfortably won the junior race; Dai Roberts of Havant AC enjoyed a comfortable win in the over-40 category and Portsmouth-based Rebecca Gough, who runs for the newly-formed Team Southampton club, was victorious in the under-15 girls' race.
In the team competition, City of Portsmouth took the local honours, with their under-13 boys finishing second while the under-13 girls celebrated a third-place finish.
