Axed ship comes to city
AXED Royal Navy frigate HMS Cornwall arrived at Portsmouth Naval Base yesterday.
The Type 22 frigate – one of four decommissioned due to government cuts – will be moored in the base with other retired ships which are awaiting disposal.
Cornwall was based in Devonport Naval Base in Plymouth, along with fellow Type 22s HMS’ Cambeltown, Chatham and Cumberland.
She left the west country earlier this week to await her fate in Portsmouth.
HMS Cumberland, which evacuated hundreds of refugees from war-torn Libya last year, is due to leave Devonport tomorrow.
She is expected to arrive in Portsmouth on Sunday.
Cambeltown and Chatham are already in Portsmouth after arriving at the naval in October last year.
The ships are in storage and will have all useful parts removed before being put up for sale by the MoD.
