FOOTBALLER Steve Duffin has received a ban for headbutting a referee during a match.

The 25-year-old, from Portsmouth, is accused of assaulting Phil Wilks during Clymping FC’s County League Division Two home clash against Southwick FC last Saturday. He has since been banned by the club and the Sussex County Football Association from all footballing activities.

Duffin told the Littlehampton Gazette: ‘First of all I would really like to say sorry. As soon as I’d done it, I walked away gutted, and I have been gutted ever since.

‘I can’t take back what I have done, and it’s really not me, I have never done anything like it before and I won’t again. I have had my own problems recently, although I am not making excuses as it shouldn’t have happened.’

Mr Wilks, 40, from Hove, who is also chairman of the Referees’ Association in the Brighton area, needed hospital treatment for a cut, bruising and concussion after the alleged assault after Duffin was sent off as Clymping trailed 5-0. He said: ‘It’s the worst thing that has ever happened to me.’

Sussex police were called to Clymping FC’s Crookthorn Lane ground, on Saturday. Duffin had left the ground by the time officers arrived at 4.40pm, but police say they are investigating. Clymping FC manager Darran Atkins, also from Portsmouth, has been sacked.
