Be brighter, cyclists told

Commuting cyclists who wear dark clothing on the roads have been urged by police to make themselves more visible to motorists.

The warnings come after a rise in the number of cyclists injured on Gosport's roads.

In the last 3 years, 161 cycle injury accidents have been reported in Gosport Borough and 35 of these involved serious injuries.

Police and community officers stopped and spoke to 182 cyclists on some of Gosport's busiest cycle routes this week, including the A32 at Mumby Road, South Street, Fareham Road and Crossfields.

Cyclists were also stopped on the approach to the ferry.

Police advised on cycle safety and also issued high visibility vests, rucksack covers and wrist bands to cyclists who were not equipped with appropriate bright clothes.
