Bishop's Waltham businesses against Sainsbury's plan
A town's businesses have officially come out in opposition to plans for a new supermarket.
The Bishop's Waltham Chamber of Trade has voted to oppose the proposals for the 35,000sq ft Sainsbury's in the town.
Andrew Grover, chairman of the chamber, said: 'Such a large supermarket would inevitably reduce footfall on the High Street and put many local traders' businesses at risk.
'The High Street is an important focus for the Bishop's Waltham community and it provides part of the life and soul of the place that is now missing in far too many small towns.'
Tony Kippenberger, chairman of Bishop's Waltham Action Group (BWAG), said they could now work together in fighting the plans, adding: 'Placing this glass and timber-clad monster in a medieval town right beside the ancient and peaceful ruins of the Bishop of Winchester's Palace and dominating the beautiful South Pond, the source of the River Hamble, would vandalise our heritage.'
