Blast off for HMS Manchester
Fresh from the cold waters of the South Atlantic, HMS Manchester is seen here firing her gun in more warmer climes.
The crew of the Portsmouth-based destroyer practised their gunnery skills in the Mediterranean off the coast of Spain,
The Type 42 ship had taken students and staff with them from Fareham's HMS Collingwood as part of the Principal Warfare Officers Course.
The three staff and 13 students completed a two-week series of live gunnery firings and warfare training, including simulated air attacks, as the ship headed to exercise areas off the Rock of Gibraltar.
A hectic weekend in Gibraltar saw the ship taking on ammunition and stores, and gave crew members a chance to have a crack at the famous Rock Run – a 2.7-mile race to the top of the Rock of Gibraltar. Manchester then sailed and took part in a live exercise with 148 Commando Battery, a commando unit specialising in infiltrating enemy positions ashore.
A navy spokesman said: 'The result of the exercise is that the students proved they can deliver safe and effective support to troops ashore.'
