Brave diver gets award
A Royal Navy diver who battled a major flood to try and repair a sinking ship has received a Queen's Commendation for Bravery.
Leading Seaman Carl Thomas repeatedly dived into the engine room of HMS Endurance to try to repair a valve that had opened, causing a major flood and near-loss of the ship.
The 28-year-old was in the submerged and darkened engine room of the ice patrol ship for more than 45 minutes.
He said: 'I was nervous but all my adrenaline and training kicked in because I knew that we needed to stop the leak to stop the ship from sinking.'
